Dennis Quaid plays a strict paterfamilias farmer-businessman happily chomping up the lands of his less successful neighbours. He wants to hand the business over to his son Zac Efron, who really wants to race cars. A story of conflict in the American heartlands develops. See the official Sony website for more and Find Any Film for where you can catch it.

There is the faint frisson of ‘Oscar buzz’ around this drama, based on the book by David Ebershoff, Eddie Redmayne plays Lili Elbe, the first person to undergo transgender surgery. Alicia Vikander plays the wife of her male self. Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, 2010) directs. Redmayne might be a shoe-in for a Best Actor nod but, judging by the trailer, Vikander might be up there with him for Best Actress. See the official website for more. Find Any Film will locate your nearest screening cinema.

Director David O. Russell must really like Jennifer Lawrence, having already steered her toward Oscar glory in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and box office triumph with American Hustle (2013). She leads this drama about a woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family dynasty. She is supported, with what seems like increasing regularity, by Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. See the official Fox website for the trailer, gallery etc. The film will be showing all across the UK.

Jean-Luc Godard’s stylish study of a marriage on the rocks, starring force of nature Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli, is given a dusting off by the BFI, showing throughout January at their London Southbank base. See this link for how to book tickets. Anna Karina, the star of Godard films, introduces the 17:50 January 16 screening.

Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie star as two romantic failures whose years of serial infidelity and self-sabotage have led them to swear that their relationship will remain strictly platonic. But can love still bloom while you’re sleeping with other people? See the official website for the lowdown. If this tickles your fancy, use Find Any Film to see where you can view it.
