Among the Believers

This documentary looks at the ideological battles shaping Pakistan and the Muslim world, looking at the radical Islamic school Red Mosque in Pakistan, which trains legions of children to devote their lives to jihad, or holy war, from a very young age. This film received rave reviews last year on the film festival junket, but failed to nab the Oscar for Best Animated Film (it went to Inside Out). Charlie Kaufman’s unique look at a male mid-life crisis is now out with a wide UK release. See the official Curzon Artificial Eye webpage for more.

This art house drama focuses on whether it is possible to return to a small community after committing the worst crime of all. Swedish pop star Ulrik Munther makes his acting debut. As you can probably tell from the title, this is the third in the DreamWorks animation series of films about the Jack Black voiced, martial arts specialist panda bear. Therefore, I shall let the official Dreamworks site and Facebook page give you everything you need to know about this latest instalment. Showing just about everywhere, so you’ll have no problems seeing it.

This drama snared a few awards at international film festivals, including Best New Director in Chicago.

Chelli (Liron Ben-Shlush) has dedicated her life to helping her sister, Gabby (Dana Ivgy), who has a mental disability. The pair live together in a dingy apartment. After a social worker insists Gabby is enrolled in a day care centre, Chelli feels abandoned and embarks on a romance with a colleague, Zohar. The Ones BelowThe Ones Below poster

Psychological drama about a couple expecting their first baby. They are thirty-something and affluent but the mother harbours deep fears about her fitness to be a mum and ability to love her child. One day another couple move in to the apartment below. They become ‘The Ones Below’ and are also expecting a baby. In contrast, this mother is full of joy at the prospect of imminent motherhood. The WitchThe Witch poster

Horror film, which has garnered some acclaim, winning the best director award at Sundance.

New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately. Family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft and as circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love become tested in unforgettable ways.
