American Pastoral

Actor Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut with this adaptation of the Philip Roth novel. He also snags the lead role as a man who gives up everything to find daughter Dakota Fanning, who goes missing after she commits a terrorist act. Critical plaudits are already trickling in (McGregor has been nominated for Best Picture at the Hamburg and San Sebastian Film Festivals) and the trailer shows a slick production. War On Everyone

Lots of splendid social media has been clogging up the broadband cables over the past week or so for this favourably reviewed comedy starring Alexander Skarsgard and Michael Pena as two crooked cops who blackmail and frame every poor, unfortunate criminal who happens across them. That is, until they try it on someone who may (or may not be) much, much bigger than they are. Check out the official website for more info including the trailer. It will have a wide release, but the website will help you book tickets for your nearest cinema.

Ben Hur

Released across the UK on Wednesday 7 September in 3D, this big-screen remake of William Wyler’s multi-Oscar winning 1959 epic and Fred Niblo’s equally esteemed 1926 silent version, has a high-class pedigree to live up to.

The making of the first two films has cemented their places in Hollywood lore, so will director Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter), tackle them head on, or kneel in their presence? Was it wise to splash $100 million on a Roman-era epic when the genre has long been out of fashion?

Jack Huston, in the title role, has what seems an insurmountable task in taking on Charlton Heston and Ramon Novarro, as does Toby Kebbel in the old Stephen Boyd/Francis X. Bushman role of Messala. It will be showing in almost all UK cinemas. See the official Paramount website for more.

Suicide Squad

The big film release of next week is this DC Comics big-screen transfer (on general release on Wednesday). Photos of Jared Leto as The Joker have snared newspaper space. The Joker is but one of a number of villainous characters who are released from prison by a shadowy US government agency to execute black ops in return for clemency. The trailer on the official site gives you a sneaky peak at a riotous actioneer that will be showing all over the UK.
