Lots of splendid social media has been clogging up the broadband cables over the past week or so for this favourably reviewed comedy starring Alexander Skarsgard and Michael Pena as two crooked cops who blackmail and frame every poor, unfortunate criminal who happens across them. That is, until they try it on someone who may (or may not be) much, much bigger than they are. Check out the official website for more info including the trailer. The Magnificent Seven
Handsome looking and smart-sounding remake of the classic 1960 John Sturges western, about a gang of renegade men who hole up in a small town to help a widow whose husband was murdered by an industrialist (Peter Sarsgaard) terrorising her community. Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington head the strong male cast, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directs. Check the official Sony Pictures webpage and Facebook page for the trailer and more about the film. Suicide Squad
The big film release of next week is this DC Comics big-screen transfer (on general release on Wednesday). Photos of Jared Leto as The Joker have snared newspaper space. The Joker is but one of a number of villainous characters who are released from prison by a shadowy US government agency to execute black ops in return for clemency. The trailer on the official site gives you a sneaky peak at a riotous actioneer that will be showing all over the UK.

Finding Dory
For fans of Disney/Pixar animations, you will be spoiled this weekend with the 3D release of the (13 years late) sequel to mega-hit Finding Nemo (2003). This film sees Dory (voiced memorably by Ellen DeGeneres), Marlin’s pal during his progeny-seeking journey, try to find her own family. Not easy when one is afflicted by crippling short-term memory loss. Ice Age: Collision Course (3D)
The big release of the week is the fifth cinematically released installment in the 20th Century Fox/Blue Sky series of animated films about a disparate group of animals during the last Ice Age and their comic journeys through the Earth’s ever shifting climate. In this film, Scrat happens upon a frozen UFO, jump starts it and smashes into the moon, accidentally causing a huge meteor to hurtle toward the planet. The race is on to stop it.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War
Casting one’s mind back, the first Huntsman film garnered international headlines when leading lady Kristen Stewart was found to have cheated on then boyfriend Robert Pattinson with the film’s director Rupert Sanders. Perhaps Stewart felt it was one bite of the poisoned apple and twice shy, for she is not part of the cast in this sequel, although Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Sam Claflin and Nick Frost are. Here, two evil sisters (Theron and Emily Blunt) prepare to conquer a fairytale land. Two renegades (Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain) set out to stop them. The Choice
Author Nicholas Sparks’ (The Notebook, The Best Of Me, et al) chronicling of young love continues with this adaptation of his novel about a young couple who fall in love until the girl’s involvement in a car accident upends their lives. Hail, Caesar!
The big release of the week is the Cohen brothers’ latest comedy about the kidnapping for ransom of a major Hollywood star (George Clooney) who is bumbling his way through a big budget, ancient Rome epic. Josh Brolin plays real-life producer Eddie Mannix, Scarlett Johansson is an Esther Wlliams style actress and Tilda Swinton is the gloriously named gossip columnist Thessaly Thacker. The Other Side Of the Door
The Walking Dead‘s Sarah Wayne Callies stars in this horror. A tragic accident takes the life of a family’s young son. The inconsolable mother learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. But when she disobeys a sacred warning to never open that door, she upsets the balance between life and death. See the Fox webpage for more. Hitchcock/Truffaut
We rather liked this documentary about French New Wave director Francois Truffaut’s interviews with (and subsequent book about) the film director Alfred Hitchcock. Read our review above for more, but the film is now out on general release, showing at these key cities.
Truth
Journalism is currently the hot topic in cinemas, the release of this film coming hot on the heels of Spotlight winning Best Film at the recent Oscars. This movie follows a scoop about a US President who is alleged to have shirked his war duties. But, in the cold light of media analysis, does the evidence stand up to scrutiny?
