The Boss

Melissa McCarthy is getting lots and lots of exposure in films since her breakout role in Bridesmaids (2011), as her recent interview with The Guardian details. Here, she stars as a powerful business woman attempting a PR makeover when she’s released from jail for insider trading, in this knockabout comedy in the same vein as her recent Spy (2015). Embrace Of the Serpent

Seen through the eyes of an Amazonian shaman, this film follows him as he searches for a fabled plant with psychedelic properties. He uses this to seek truth from his people by looking into their dreams; for the two scientists accompanying him, the plant is a commodity to be exploited. Showing at key cities only, the official Peccadillo Pictures webpage lets you know and has the trailer and gallery of stills.

Fire At Sea

Documentary from film-maker Gianfranco Rosi, who concentrates on the people, cultures and traditions of the islanders of Lampedusa, which has hit the headlines as being the first port of call for migrants during the current EU migration crisis. Learning To Drive

A slight-sounding comedy but with an exceptional cast, as a renowned and fiery, middle-aged Manhattan author (Patricia Clarkson) decides she wants to drive after her husband leaves her for a younger woman. An Indian taxi driver (Ben Kingsley) who is on the verge of an arranged marriage is the man who helps her, as she helps him learn how to impress a woman. Miracles From Heaven

Jennifer Garner stars as a mother passionately searching a solution to her daughter’s incurable medical condition. After a freak accident, a miracle happens that confounds the experts and inspires her community. Martin Henderson and Queen Latifah co-star. See the official Sony Pictures website for more. It’s not the best sign of quality that this starry film will be on a limited release only, so use Find Any Film if you are interested in seeing it.

Mother’s Day

Star-studded comedy from Garry Marshall, reuniting him with his Pretty Woman (1990) and Runaway Bride (1999) leading lady Julia Roberts in which some very different woman navigate the difficulties inherent in being a ‘mom’. Noma: My Perfect Storm

Documentary that follows Rene Redzepi, the proprietor of the famed restaurant Noma, winner of the ‘Best Restaurant in the World’ prize four times. Redzepi discusses his philosophy on great food and how his restaurant has helped shaped dining out world wide. See the official website for more; it will be on a limited run only.

The Stanford Prison Experiment

Just the title of this film takes me back to my ‘A’ Level Psychology days! Dr Zimbardo and his carefully designed observational study into what happens when a group of men are divided into the roles of ‘Prisoner’ and ‘Guard’. The results made Zimbardo’s name and showed us the shocking lengths humans can go to when literally dressing up and playing such parts. Billy Crudup stars as Zimbardo. When Marnie Was There

Anime film about shy, artistic Anna moving to the seaside and stumbling upon an old mansion and the mysterious Marnie who lives there. The two girls instantly form a friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh House, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend. “Do you think cinema is dangerous?” was the question we posed on Twitter a few months back, following our review at TIFF15 of this Michael Moore documentary, after an exclamation from an audience member that such documentary is a too powerful force. Moore himself responded and a fantastic little debate kicked off in the ‘twittersphere’.
