American crime drama set on the border with Mexico, about two brothers, one a violinist and the other a mercenary and the choices they make in the turbulent American-Mexican drug war. The film stars Thomas Jane and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film will be showing at key cities only. Check out IMDb for the details.

Bypass

George Mackay, who so sensitively played Joe in Pride (2014) continues to impress with the lead in this drama about a teenager who gets in too deep when he dabbles in petty crime. The official website, with trailer and details of where to see the film, has more info.

Cobain: Montage of Heck

Nirvana fans rejoice, this documentary blends the late lead singer Kurt Cobain’s personal archive of art, music, never seen before movies, animation and interviews from his family and closest friends. DroneDrone poster

Force Majeure

Brittle and sardonic sounding Swedish comedy-drama about a man who, in a moment of instant cowardice, abandons his wife and two children when an avalanche threatens them whilst on holiday. His family survive, but it causes a rift between him and his wife and some probing questions from their friends when he refuses to admit what happened. Good KillGood Kill poster

Films about drones are clearly in vogue this week, with this action drama. A Las Vegas fighter-pilot turned drone-pilot (Ethan Hawke) fights the Taliban via remote control for half of his day, then goes home to his wife (January Jones) and kids in the suburbs for the other half. The official Arrow Films webpage has a bit more detail about this film (including the trailer) which will have a wide distribution, so should feature at your local big multiplex.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2

There aren’t enough films about Hot Tubs, and precious few about them being time machines. So if you like both prepare to fill your boots with this sequel, as the old gang get back together to rescue one of their number after he is shot by an unknown assailant. The official UK website has the low-down, the film will be playing all across the UK.

Viggo Mortensen leads in this Danish ‘western’ as a man who searches for his daughter, who eloped with her lover in the dead of night. They then journey to a desert beyond the confines of civilization. The official Soda Pictures webpage has details of the cinemas you can catch it at, in key UK cities only.

John Wick

Crime dramas featuring cute dogs are also all the rage these days. After the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in The Drop with Tom Hardy earlier this year we now have Keanu Reeves seeking revenge against New York underworld figures who killed his cute Beagle puppy, a present from his late, beloved wife. A fantastic colour scheme of neon-electric blues and greens are used in this flashy looking piece, co-starring Game Of Thrones’ Alfie Allen. It will have a wide distribution, so should be in your local big multiplex…or check Find Any Film if you want to be extra prepared.

Lost RiverLost River poster

Actor Ryan Gosling makes his debut as a director with this strange sounding, fantastical drama about a young mother who enters a dark lifestyle during financial hardship, leaving her eldest son to look after his younger brother. The reviews thus far have been savage, calling the film self-indulgent and a poor mix of David Lynch and Gosling’s Svengali, Nicholas Winding Refn. See for yourselves though as the film will be released in key UK cities. The official trailer is on Youtube.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Kevin James returns as the inept mall security guard who decides to take a well-earned vacation to Las Vegas with his young daughter. But when duty calls, Blart is on-hand to help. The official Sony Pictures webpage has the trailer and you should be able to see it at most multiplexes.

Woman In GoldWoman In Gold poster

Helen Mirren stars as an elderly Jewish woman who tackles the Austrian establishment in order to reclaim part of her heritage, namely the famous Woman In Gold painting by Gustav Klimt that apparently features her sister, who died in the Nazi death camps, as the woman. Ryan Reynolds supports as her plucky but inexperienced American lawyer who helps her seek justice.

Dark Summer

While home alone under house arrest, a teenager undergoes a terrifying brush with the supernatural in this stylish, hair-rising horror film from director Paul Solet, co-starring Peter Stormare. The distributors webpage is here with a trailer and the film will be shown in key cities only.

Kate Winslet, Theo James and Shailene Woodley continue the Divergent sci-fi adventures. Beatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side. The Gunman

Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone star in this Pierre Morel directed action thriller about a former Special Forces soldier and military contractor, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, who goes on the run across Europe. The official Open Road Films webpage is here; you should be able to catch the film at independent cinema chains or the larger multiplexes, so check Find Any Film to see if there is one near you.

Dreamworks’ animated feature about Oh, a misfit from another planet, who lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people. He forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own. They learn much about each other and themselves along the way. Mommy

This French language Canadian film concerns a passionate widowed single mom (Anne Dorval) who finds herself burdened with her unpredictable 15-year-old ADHD son (Antoine Olivier Pilon). As they struggle to make ends meet, Kyla (Suzanne Clément), the new neighbor across the street, offers her help. Gruelling looking Danish drama starring Game Of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who kidnaps a petty criminal’s son to be looked after by him and his wife. The official Vertigo Films webpage has the trailer. Showing at key cities only.

Sixteen

British urban thriller about an African former child soldier who was brought to London by Laura (Rachael Stirling), an aid worker who he now lives with. He has grown to the age of 16, has a girlfriend and life is good, until he witnesses a street stabbing and pressure mounts for him to resume his violent past. The Tale Of the Princess Kaguya

From the same studio that gave the world Spirited Away, this animated feature explores how a tiny girl found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter (James Caan) and his wife (Mary Steenburgen), grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady (Chloë Grace Moretz). The mysterious young princess enthralls all who encounter her – but ultimately she must confront her fate, the punishment for her crime. It’s not often that Ryan Reynolds makes an amusing, or indeed an interesting, movie. In fact, he probably hasn’t ever, but this one promises to go the distance and be good. It might actually be great, going by the very funny and completely whacky trailer. He plays a lonely factory worker (is that possible with his looks?) who, urged on by the voices of his beloved cat and dog, murders co-worker Gemma Arterton. His shrink Jackie Weaver tries to help him, as he then starts romancing Anna Kendrick, another colleague. The pastel visual style and clean colours are reminiscent of a John Waters film, but the director is Marjane Satrapi. Wild Card

Jason Statham starring action thriller about a bodyguard (Statham) who goes after the sadistic thug who beat his friend, only to find that the object of his wrath is the son of a powerful mob boss. The official Facebook page is here; catch it as easily as you would the common cold folks.

Bonobo

A marriage is put to the test when the wife is offered lucrative work as an escort. The money is great and they are desperate, but how will their otherwise idyllic family life cope emotionally and sexually? Eastern Boys

Crazy sounding French gay film in which a man propositions an Eastern European rent boy and ends up with a whole gang of them partying in his flat the next day. Billed as a love story and a taut thriller, this is an odd looking pick-up. The official Peccadillo Pictures webpage includes screening locations.

Get Santa

British, festive comedy with Jim Broadbent and Warwick Davis. A father and son team up to save Christmas once they discover Santa Claus sleeping in their garage after crashing his sleigh and finding himself on the run from the police. It will be showing at most UK cinemas.

Martial arts action film charting the back-story of the man who trained film legend Bruce Lee. Starring Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang and with choreography from the team behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), there are scenes in the trailer that look beyond ravishing with eye-boggling fight scenes. Hello Carter

It doesn’t auger well for a movie in this era of social media-driven marketing when its Facebook page has only 15 likes (as of 30 November). Shame as this is a cute looking comedy starring Charlie Cox and Jodie Whittaker. Down-on-his-luck Carter has been dumped, lost his job and his home. On a mission to win back his ex-girlfriend, he agrees to help her psychotic brother, which starts a chain reaction of adventures. My, Myself and Mum

French comedy about a young man embracing his inner heterosexual after being brought up in a manner in which everyone assumes he is gay. Originally released in France more than a year ago, the official website will give you photos and the trailer. Showing at key cities only.

Mea Culpa

French thriller about good cops Franck and Simon. Their lives take a tailspin when Simon causes a tragic car wreck after drink driving. A few years later and out of the police, he is forced to take matters into his own hands when his family is in danger. It will be on a limited run only so use Find Any Film for cinemas near to you or keep your peepers out for your local art house cinemas listings.

Men, Women & Children

Drama about a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image, and their love lives. Open Bethlehem

Documentary from director Leila Sansour as she returns to Bethlehem to make a film about her home town, soon to be encircled by a wall. She intends her film to be a tribute to her late father, founder of Bethlehem University, and a man regarded as a hero by his town’s folk. As Bethlehem approaches ruin her decision to flee this sleepy town, taken much to her father’s regret, comes to haunt her. Grim and scary-looking Indiana Jones meets The Blair Witch Project (2009) horror from the producer of The Hills Have Eyes (2006). The official website has more details and it will be showing across most UK cinemas.

School of Babel

Documentary following a group of teenagers from as far afield as China and Brazil after they arrive in a French High School and are enrolled in the same class. The New Wave Films webpage has the lowdown including the key cities it will be playing in.

St. Vincent

Bill Murray vehicle about Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) and her adopted 12-year-old son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), who move next door to war veteran Vincent (Murray). When Oliver gets locked out after school one day, Vincent allows him to stay at his house until his mom gets home. Because he has bills up to the ceiling and is desperate for cash, he tells Maggie he’ll babysit Oliver every day after school. Vincent then introduces Oliver to his lifestyle, including gambling, drinking, and his relationship with a Russian prostitute (Naomi Watts). The Polar Express

Not the greatest, but possibly the most fun, Christmas film ever made. Robert Zemeckis’ enduring fantasy is about a little boy taken on a magical night-time journey to the North Pole to see how Christmas is wrapped up by Santa, courtesy of the titular, always on-time train (clearly this is not set in the UK). A one day special screening via Cineworld, check out the Park Circus website for details.
